I just took a preliminary look at the transmission pan and the first problem i see is that there is a frame member crossing the pan just over the rear most bolt of the pan. I don't see much clearance to get a open wrench or socket in there.

A little work with a rotary file helps. I use a 1/4" drive universal socket on an extension for that one. An Allen head capscrew and a ball-end Allen wrench would make it even easier.

If I were spending the big bucks on a pan, I would buy one with fins. A cast aluminum finned pan has much more surface area to get rid of heat than a smooth one. Even sand cast aluminum has an advantage over smooth cast. Even coarse sandblasting can improve cooling.

For maximum heat transfer, an aluminum pan should be rough and black, inside and out. Not black with paint, but with a chemical blackener or anodizing, as paint is an insulator.

The best pans have cast-in rods sticking up as far as possible, to pick up even more heat than just the inside surface. To my knowledge, no one makes them for TH400s, but I have seen them on Italian race cars and used one on a Corvair. Made a big difference in desert racing.

If I ever run out of things to do, I will drill 5/16" holes in the bottom of my pan and weld in some aluminum rod to carry away more heat. And some scoops and ducts to flow cool air over the pan instead of engine-heated air. I did the duct thing on a tow car, and it made a difference climbing the worst hills in summer.

TH400s came with two depths of pan. The MH chassis usually had the deeper one. A little over 3", I think.

I wonder if a previous owner or mech put on a passenger car pan. Perhaps an exchange transmission was involved.

Mag HyTec has one for the TH400. Note the caveat about crossmember clearance.

Wrong. I gave you all the help and insight you needed, let you use my tools, let the barth stay overnight. And, I knocked 500 off the asking price. What you should have done differently, is done what I told you to do.

As I recall, this thread was concerning tires and tranny pans....

The thread has been inactive since 8/4, then 8 weeks later at 4 AM you need to add this to it?

Get some sleep.

BTW Goodyear does not recommend running 245 tire on a 6 inch P30 rim. Several people have done it with no problems, diameter is correct as you said, should be no trouble.
