We have just taken possession of a 1988 Barth Regal. And need to drive it 250 miles home - today. Probably towing a Honda Accord.
It has older tires (Standard? 8r19.5) and one new Goodyear 245/70r19.5 on the front to replace a flat.
And no spare.
Is it a problem to have two different kinds of tires on the front?
Sadly, the seller wants it gone and will not provide insight or help. We should have done things differently - had we known this before we gave him our money!

The slower you drive and the cooler the air and road, the safer you will be.

Ideally, front tires should be matched, and rear should be the same size.

I would look at putting the 245 on the rear and checking for clearance at the lower bulges. Two 245s on the same axle end might rub, but one of each might be OK. Inflate all on each axle to max sidewall or rim pressure, not exceeding either. Rims are marked on the rear. All wheels on the same axle need the same pressure, but front can be different from back in your situation.

Does it have a spare? How old is it? It is not uncommon for a spare to fail, since it has not had the benefit of the sidewall flexing that makes sidewalls "bloom". However, that is offset somewhat by the lack of sun exposure.

Put 85 PSI in all tires. Check them after a hour to see if the hold pressure. If they hold I would go with them and check them every hour or so. If there like ours they will be a pain in the a$$ to check and fill. It takes me 2 different chucks, 1 strait, 1 angled reverse and 1" extenders on valve stems.

Your better option is to set up getting new tires before you head home. You won't have to worry about it. you need new tires anyway. I understand that tire will make the cost of the Barth go way up, but that's part of the cost of motor homing safely.

Low air pressure is 1 off the main causes of blowouts. When I 1rst picked up our 86 31' it had original tires on the rear. 23 years old. I put 120 miles on them before I knew how old they were . the fronts were over 10. Replaced them all with new Good Year G670 RV. They're about 4 year old and been happy with them so far.

I agree with Doorman - tires are too important to take chances. At the least, I'd certainly at least match the front ones, replacing the older one before heading home. I addition, I'd replace all the fluids before the trip and have the chassis lubed.

Always consider the chassis when evaluating tire opinions. Example: MWrench is a sharp guy, but he hates the tires I love. His coach is way different from mine.

I believe the Barthmobile CD has the GM manuals. There is the standard GM light truck manual and the GM motor home manual. Be sure the coach is aligned to MH manual specs and not potato chip truck spec.

You will be fine. I run 8Rs in back and 245s in front. Having two matched tires up front is good.

What is the best manual to get for servicing this chassis and drive train.

I Thought looking at the milage that this might be the one from Dayton. Glad you had a good trip back. If I had known you were coming, I could have met you and giving you a lot more info on Your Regal than the owner.

Steve VW loaded a pdf for 86 chassie on this forum. Will try to find that link. I bought service manual off Ebay for mine. There is also a pdf on here for P30 suspension and alignment. If you have any questions this forum is a great place for answer.

The factory Chevy Light Truck manual is what you need to cover you chassis. There is no Barth service manual. Barth came with a Barth manual, It is a binder that had manuals for all the Equipment in the coach. Replicas of these binders are available thru Bill NY.

It appears that you are in your early stages of Barth addiction. I went thru this myself. As you get further into the coach and appreciate the quality of workmanship that went into these coaches the worse it gets. I have been told that a bottle of 25 year old scotch help the withdraw symptoms.

I always thought I wanted a GMC. After buying my Barth the GMC don't have the appeal they use to. You got a good affordable chassis and as our motto at Barthmobile goes. "You can repair a Barth faster than they fall apart."or something like that.

The transmission fluid is best changed by removing the pan and installing a drain plug. I would also recommend installing a bung for a temp gauge. Replace the filter(ABC), reinstall and flush the tranny and converter with new fluid. I believe I posted a link here a while back.

The diff may or may not have a drain plug. If so, drain and refill. If not, use a sucker to get all the old fluid out. After sucking, raise one end and go inside and watch a ball game. that will let the oil in the bearing cavity drain down. Repeat for other side. Then refill, doing the same to fill both cavities before you check the level for the final check.

Apologies in advance if this sounds overly thorough, but I used to be an airline mechanic, and you know how they are.

I also had temp sensor gauge but it was installed in the cooler line. I preferred the gauge located in the pan and installed the bung there. Much nicer when draining fluid to be able to DRAIN FIRST, then remove pan, less messy!

You probably have the deep pan. Be sure that the filter pick up tube is the longer one.
