Dale, Little David was peeking out, right behind the front tire, didn't you see him? Unfortunately, the student's wax and polish was two years ago. This latest effort was my own. If it wasn't for a few corrosion spots, the coach would appear as new. We are heading for Scusset State Beach for five days later this week. There will be two RV clubs coming together with about twenty coaches. We will be essentially be boon-docking as they have us in the safari field. Should be a good opportunity to try out the new Genturi. Bill G

Years ago, I made a similar DIY Genturi lashup for my former S.O.B., using the conduit elbow, but 2" Schedule 40 electrical conduit for the pipe, not ABS. I kept the pieces, though it was too short for the Barth, until I scrounged a 3' piece of galvanized double-wall stove pipe from my builder son-in-law's unused materials stock. My original setup had the exhaust pipe up into the tube, & it puffed back as the genny ran. This time, I left a gap equal to the diameter of the original exhaust pipe, & it doesn't puff. I guess the designers knew what they were doing when they set it up that way. My next step is to figure out how to use some aluminized dryer hose for the up pipe instead of the schedule 40. The sched. 40 is heavy & bulky, while the dryer hose is light, and will collapse into a small box.

olroy, I don't know about the dryer pipe, but my thin wall PVC breaks down into three sections about 30 inches each. It stores easily and is easy to assemble. Flexible dryer pipe would be difficult to support without some sort of bracket that fixed near the roof. That would make it difficult to attach. However clever people find interesting ways to do many things. I would be interested to see your design. Bill G

Bill G, how to support the dryer hose is the precise problem I'm wrestling with. I won't let it keep me awake at night, but maybe I'll come up with something while I sleep. If I do, I'll post it. I'll try to find some thin wall PVC, though I don't recall ever seeing any more than 1 1/2" or 2" in diameter. We don't have a lot of resources in this small town. Your suction cup solution to attach the pipe is more elegant than what I had before, but I can't find the big ones locally. We have a Home Depot, but the nearest Lowes is 60 miles away. There's a Red Lobster there too, Mama's favorite. Maybe she'll let me take her to dinner, & I can hit Lowes for the pipe & suction cups.

It took me a bit to overcome my brain pfart, but the gap should be just as you've mentioned, equal to the diameter of the exhaust pipe. The experience you had with the "genturi" not functioning well with the exhaust up in the stack actually has a name - the "Krushnik [sic.] Effect", or more properly,"Krushnic Effect", discovered by a model rocketeer, Richard Krushnic, in the late '60s. What a beautiful work of art! I'm curious where you folks carry the Genturi while on the road? Larry and Heidi from CA

The Krushnic effect is a result of over-expansion and can be eliminated by using a smaller outer tube or having a gap (equal to or greater than the exhaust pipe diameter) between the exhaust pipe and the up pipe. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

If you look closely at the tube, you will see that it breaks down into three pieces, each about 30" in length. The base also detaches along with the center connection. As a result of this, it stores rather easily in one of the compartments. Bill & Georgene Goodwin 92 (Feb.) I have the propane powered Kwiatt(sp) 7 KW in mine and it is indeed quiet but the cooling fan noise is excessive! This is the radiator fan not the generator fan. Has anyone done anything to quiet this down? Fan clutch? Electric fan? The belt driven fan is the best most fool proof but it is loud! I hope someone comes up with a solution! Mine's air-cooled - it sounds like yours is liquid-cooled - but mine really produces a mechanical cacaphony. It's soon to get a new muffler and resonator, but it still makes a bunch of noise. I've considered replacing it with a Generac or Onan, but current production gensets are single cylinder, and my marine engineer alter-ego demands twins... BTW, I've not been happy with what I can find for thinwall drain pipe for the "genturi" clone - so I'm going to try Selkirk propane water heater galvanized steel 3" pipes, which come in 5' sections, and which have a proprietary coupling that should make disassembly/assembly quite easy. Have you considered the Honda EV series? They have a vee-twin water-cooled engine. Their compactness allows them to be mounted in compartments with closed sides and air inlet on the bottom. If the compartments are damped with Dynamat or similar and lined with Owens Corning 703 with baffling at the air inlet, they can be very quiet. Generac will leave you in the lurch. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

The problem with the Hondas is they're all gaso-fuelled AFAIK, and I don't know where I could stuff a gasoline tank in safely... Incidently, back to the Genturi-clone idea - I've been to several contractors' supply places, and a couple of Lowe's - the very thinwall 3" PVC seems unavailable. I'm going to try to get some Selkirk 3" gas hot water heater flues (5' sections, and a self-locking connector). More tomorrow... I have read or heard of the EVs being converted to propane. Here is one place: http://www.propane-generators.com/ev6010_kits.htm And another: http://www.propanecarbs.com/ Constant-speed engines are not too difficult to convert. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

Thanks for the links! Before I replace the Kohler, I'm going to see if the clatter can be reduced. Odd that the Honda liquid-cooled are cheaper than the Onan MicroQuiets... I picked up 2x3' ($10 each) and 1x5' ($15) section of the Selkirk RV 3" flue piping at Lowe's, as the 3" thinwall PVC is apparently gone. These weigh somewhat less than 3" drain pipe (P-160, which has intermediate wall thickness). The design is such that couplings aren't required. This looks like a reasonable substitute for the nowhere-to-be-found PVC thinwall. http://www.selkirkinc.com/pdfs/typeb/GV-20RV.pdf Rusty "StaRV II" '94 28' Breakaway: MilSpec AMG 6.5L TD 230HP Nelson and Chester, not-spoiled Golden Retrievers Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not.
