Off to Alaska and along the way discovered that the Barth had a terrible habit of the tail wagging the dog. First guess was shocks, but up on the rack at Eric's RV we discovered the steering gear was wore out. So much for 87K on the coach. They don't wear out in that short of time.

Our Breakaway has an axle mounted Saginaw 710 steering gear box. I ordered one to be shipped to a truck repair center in Juneau, AK. After getting the old one off, it turned out they had shipped me the wrong one, so after two days I left the shop with the old steering gear and a sloppy gear box. I then crawled under and took a bunch of pictures of the gear setup and emailed them to the supplier. Last week when we crossed back into the USA my first stop was a UPS store and shipped the wrong gear back to the vendor. The day the got it they shipped me the correct unit. This was installed yesterday and it is like driving a different machine. It actually turns when you first move the steering wheel, rather than waiting to catch up.

Anyway, the gear I have is also used by International Harvester. The vendor was Truck Parts Specialists in Denver. The price is $376 plus $150 core charge, and they know which one we need.
