My 1985 25' Regal has a propane leak. The shut off valve resembles a hose faucet. When it is turned to open it you can hear propane leaking out. When fully opened the hissing sound goes away. I have not tested it with soapy water but if it leaks at this point it is very slight. Does anyone know what sort of packing material, O rings, or seals I will find when I remove the collar nut? I tried tightening the nut in the hope that it would seal the leak. This did not help. I expect I will need to fully empty the tank in order to make this repair. Any ideas on where to source replacement seals? Will I have to replace the whole valve assembly? All comments are appreciated. Jim 1985 25' Regal 454

I resized and sent to Photobucket. If you're having issues with PB, please resize to 8" longest side, and email to me. Thanks. You may want to get the tank tested also. I'm not sure the exact time frame but I think it's every ten years. Someone out there may know for sure. Ed.

Doug I think it's also a DOT regulation and I have heard that they can and sometimes will test vehicles such as RV's before allowing them on Ferries or in tunnels especially at Border Crossings. For safety sake if the tank is rusted as shown, why not have some peace of mind and have if tested. ED.

I will consider having the tank tested but I know the leak I have now is from the stem that unscrews to open the valve. I removed the faucett type handle for the picture. The little checking I did on the internet lead me to believe that these tanks were NOT required to be tested at prescribed intervals. 1985 25' Regal 454

When I had mine filled I asked about tank inspections or if they need to be replaced after a certain date. The service guy at Town and Country gas told me that Motorhome tanks have a ASME rating and do not have to be tested or replaced like the DOT rated tanks. He said the tanks are built like tanks literally. His opinion was he would be more concered about inspecting all the steel pipe, hoses and associated valves and regulators that make up the gas supply throughout the coach.
