Turbo 400 Substitute for 87 Barth Regal 25' 454 ?

Hi Y'all.

Anyone have recommendations for a new transmission for a Barth Regal 25' with a Chevy 454 that ISN'T a Turbo 400? Can't seem to find a Turbo 400 anywhere.

I'm at my wits end. I've been going through a 1.5 year ordeal of a blown transmission.

I bought a transmission from Advance Auto to replace my blown original. Turns out that was a terrible idea - they sold me a broken transmission and will not honor the warranty nor refund me. So I'm out thousands.

And the transmission does not work. The parts inside were busted, so I tried to have it rebuilt. After a long time waiting on parts and Advance Auto, it was rebuilt, only to find that the transmission housing was cracked. Garbage!

I just want to start over and get another transmission.

Any tips? Thoughts? I saw something about a Turbo 475, but I don't know if those will be easier to find...

A while back I replaced transmission and torque converter with TCI units in my 86 Regal. I was very satisfied.

Good luck.

Where are you located? Lots of candidates are on FB marketplace and on Craigslist.

This one is in Pennsylvania, said to have 50K miles.

Have had 2 th400 rebuilt by the same rebuilder, after the rebuild they were better than new. I asked the same question and the rebuilder told me that it would be a lot of work to change out, I asked about th700 and he gave me the same answer. Probably best to stay with the TH400, maybe a local junk yard for a replacement and a local rebuilder.

My rebuilder also suggested adding a Gear Star overdrive, again more expense.

my local rebuilder probably has the parts you need or a unit he can rebuild, PM me if you want to talk to him.

The Turbo 400 and the Turbo 475 are almost identical. The cases and most of the internals are the same except for some of the gears. These gears have straight cut teeth in the 475 and helical teeth in the 400. They are physically interchangeable. (Some of the transmissions in motorhomes had extended tail pieces attached for the parking brake.)

The straight gears are stronger than the helical gears, so the 475 is considered the heavy duty version. The 475 had a slightly higher load rating but both are very strong.

Oh man, TCI is the company that my rebuilt transmission came from. Cracked housing and broken drum from poor rebuild.

I'll have to check there! Not finding it on Facebook or the regular sellers.

Any ideas for an upgrade? 4L80E? Allison 2000?

If you are near NE Ohio, Rossler Transmissions is highly recommended for heavy duty products and sevices.
