In examining the chassis of my new Breakaway, I found a threaded opening with no plug...in what I believe is the engine/transmission adaptor/torque converter housing. Transmission fluid levels fine, oil levels fine. This looks as though it may have been missing for awhile. Some oil around it, but doesn't appear to have been a "wet" location. Is this an access plug of some sort?

I don;t remember what it is for but the mechanic who last worked on our bus said that it should be plugged to keep dirt & debris from getting in. We just put in a plastic plug since heat is not a factor.

Thanks. I'm looking for the right plug or cap to seal it, as I felt that way myself. Glad to know it isn't an issue.

You have to be careful about plugging that hole. If you have a rear crankhaft seal leak,as I do, it will build up engine oil there and the torque converter will sling it all around inside and there will be oil leaks all around the bell housing.

I used a plastic plug but drilled a small hole in it so that the oil could escape. I loose about a table spoon of oil each time I stop. what ever oil is slung up and around the inside of the bell housing will drop and leak out there when I stop, makes a big mess!

I had a piece of PVC pipe routed to the rear of the coach and when I would go to areas that I didn't want to leave the oil spot, I would quickly put a can under the pipe to catch the leaking oil. The pipe broke when I came out of a driveway and scraped the rear trailer hitch.

I only use a quart of oil between oil changes of about 3K-4K miles.

Thank you Ed. That is most helpful. I have some oil that appears to have come through there as well, so I suppose I also have a leak at the rear crankshaft seal. It doesn't appear to be excessive. Anyway, now I understand. I'll do as you suggested.
Thanks very much.

Ed is right about drilling a hole in the plug ... I almost forgot about that little detail. Thanks for following up, ED.
The plug I used is just a standard plumbing plug, 3/4" or 1" ... I don't remember which.
