BarthBluesmobileA modern starter for the vintage 454
In working through my electrical issues, I found that the power cable to the starter had shorted out. I bought a new cable to fit.
I read of others using the "mini starter", and I was leery of the name. One version is from AC Delco, with numbers 336-1910A or 88864291.
It has a smaller cable lug, I wish I knew that before I'd ordered the cables with the 3/8" lug.
There's a notable size difference.
The numbers are for the 1998 P30 454 chassis.
Happy Motoring,

BarthBluesmobileIt's imperative to note that bolts must be changed.
ACDelco GM Genuine Parts Replacement Bolts 12338064.
The length is the same, but this bolt has a knurled region on the shaft to better keep the starter best positioned.

BarthBluesmobileIn doing this work, with the starter out, I was able to see that the heat shield I'd installed on the older starter was rubbing on the headers. I had no way of seeing that before. I also saw that the spark plug boots on cylinders 6 and 8 were turning discolored, I better get a spark plug boot protector on those.

Steve VWTen years ago I replaced the starter in the Regal with a ministarter. Much smaller, much lighter, cranks well. It is still in service.
Due to the smaller size there is better clearnace for cooling and wiring. Best of all, the starter had numerous holes to allow the solenoid to be rotated and mounted in several position. I set it up so the solenoid hangs down. This was a huge improvement. Prior to that I had to connect the wires before installing the starter due to tight clearances. Now I could install the starter and attach the wires free and clear below the starter.
