Hello Barth Gurus, I have a 79 Barth, 454 on a P30.. The tranny is an automatic 3 speed... Does anyone know what model it would be? Chevy Turbo400? Turbo350? Thanks!

Turbo Hydramatic 400 or 475.

The 475 is the same as a 400, but has a drum emergency brake on the tailshaft. This is on the heavier P30 chassis that has disk brakes front AND rear.

Both TH350 and 400 pan have 13 bolts, but the shape is different. The 350 pan is square with one corner a 45 degree angle bevel. The 400 is a mixture of straight lines and curves, longer than it is wide, and has two large dimples, one behind the other.

The 400 is just over 2 feet long to the gasket surface of the tailshaft housing, while the 350 is like 22 inches.

350 has a kickdown cable, 400 does not.

Vacuum modulator is on the right front on a 400. I don't know about a 350.

Hey Bill,
Thanks for the great reply! I must have a hybrid.. *S* Mine has the 13 bolts, does not appear to have straight lines or curves, but does have the 2 dimples (if a dimple is a 1/4 circle indentation, both on the right side, front and rear corners). Does not appear to have a kickdown cable and the vacuum modulator is on the right front (just above the front corner pan indentation).

Turbo 350?

Thanks again!
Mike

THIS site says 400 modulator is on the right rear.

http://home.hiwaay.net/~ppatter/auto_tranny_id.htm

.............................................

THIS site says modulator is on the right forward.

http://www.bulkparts.com/MM011.ASP?pageno=1209

I went out and checked my stock, and the 400 indeed has the modulator on the right front, more or less beneath the cooler lines. Contrary to what the second site says, it also has a stamped sheet-metal governor cover plate on the RIGHT side, held on by four bolts.

The first site lied about the location of the modulators. The second site lide about the location of the governor. GEEZ! Who ya gonna believe? I have corrected my earlier post, and I apologize for providing incorrect information, and hope I have not contributed to any inconvenience.

So, it appears that you have a TH400, like most, if not all, P30s. Is your engine a big block? A picture is worth a thousand words, so look at the two sites, and this may all make more sense to you.

Wheew, for a while I thought we had a Turbo 375! You know, the one with the brake! By the way, Our spare tire is in the 2nd closet. As soon as Irene completes her "Joe Weilder" course, I'll have a way to get it out of there if we ever need it. We met a couple at a campground in Canada with a really neat 70's P30 Barth and their spare was in the "trunk", It looked like you'd have to lift it straight up at least four feet while reaching way out somehow, OUCH!!... Anyone got a pet gorilla?
Cheers, John

Hello Bill,
Another great reply! Yes, I have a big block 454. And after reviewing the information and links that you provided, I have determined it to be a TH400. THANKS again for all of your assistance and hope I don't wear out my welcome around here because my Barth is going to be a serious project. Have a great day!

Mike
