I understand that on my diesel powered '92 Breakaway that the dash HVAC (vents/defrost operation), and a separate operation for the cruise control, are both vacume driven. And that the part called a "venture" is no longer available. Numerous very helpful posts on retrofitting parts to generate vacume can be found here.
While under the hood of my '90 Volvo 240 I noticed mounted on the firewall what I believe appears to be a vacume generator.

Does anyone have a thought as to whether this pictured part would serve as a vacume generator for my diesel? (I have a source for Volvo used parts and would like to get a couple of these, knowing that it's a matter of time they would be needed.) Thanks all.

I used that Volvo part. I didn't fit it correctly and it did fail but it was my error. You just need to make sure it doesn't run continuously.

I installed the Volvo part some years ago; with the GM engine, my Breakaway had a vacuum pump as OEM.

Ted, Thumbs UpGreat job on the picture Thumbs Up
Here on the sight is vacuum pump repair written by Nick Cagle if my memory serves me right. Maybe Nick can find the posting if you have not already located it.
The cruise control is not vacuum operated on my Regency. Just the heater control.

Great thoughts. Three existing wires to the pictured pump. Imagine one is 12v power, one is switch for when vacume/vacuum in the accumulator calls for additional vacuum, and remaining as ground. (My imagination prefers simplicity.) Or do I need to incorporate a sort of external switch/vacuum sensor that calls for activation when vacuum drops to a certain level in the accumulator.

My vacuum pump runs any time the heating - ventilation system is on. It has no tank that I am aware of. It turns on when you use the control for heat and ventilation, air conditioner. Vacuum pump shuts off if you turn of the heat-air to OFF.

BTW, thanks Kevin for the spelling correction call. I trust you'll let me know if you spot a hair on the top of either ear.

Most all Breakaways had a cruise control that used vacuum for the actuator. so yes there would be two vacuum generators used. When I used the Volvo pump I ran a line back to the cruise control.

I did use a vacuum switch that shut off the pump at ~15" but would run continuously when driving in areas above 5000 ft.

Later I adapted a GM electronic cruise control from a 3500 GM truck, SOOO much better!

"adapted" transcribes as "overwhelmingly challenging" (and therefore passively aggressive - careful). And so, pursuing the maintenance route, does the pictured component incorporate an activation switch, does it run continuously when the Volvo's A/C is activated (which hasn't worked since I had hair (floor/heat vents being default), or is the activation switch external - ie. at the accumulator bottle.
