Has anyone ever done, or ever considered, putting one of the air conditioners that are on small buses on their Barth? I am referring to buses with about twelve person capacities. From what I read on the internet it may be feasible. I think that one would use an engine mounted compressor with the condenser, evaporator, etc. being on the roof. One with a capacity of around 30K BTU may fit okay. If no one has done it does anyone know if it would work or not? The purpose would be for cooling while driving. We came back from the Keys a few weeks ago and it was extremely uncomfortable. Lance, did you run your roof air conditioner during the trip? When we had our Regal, we would close off the rear of the Barth by closing the door between the living area and the sleeping area, turn on the generator and run the front air conditioner. At 13500 BTUs, it cooled the front area down nicely. Jim

Yes, I have! Replaced the entire unit with a commercial unit used on Airport busses and ambulances. Works great. Ran the last two days in high 80's without any need for the roof airs. 1993 32' Regency Wide Body, 4 speed Allison Trans, Front Entry door, Diamond Plate aluminum roof & 1981 Euro 22' w Chevy 350 engine and TH 400 tranny

We have done that in the past. In fact, we have made a curtain setup to isolate the front end of the coach. The problem is that I am pretty much convinced that the front roof AC is not fully functional. It was unable to cool the coach while we were in the Keys. Even now it does not cool anywhere as well as it has in the past. We are also looking at replacing it also. I am divided between the Atwood unit and the Dometic Brisk Air II. Having enjoyed Tom Johns' Atwood, I'd suggest there's no decision needed - the Atwood! Lance, I'm sure you know this but for general info purposes, the filters on roof units need to be very clean. I can tell in a second when ours are starting to get even a little dirty, because the air isn't as cold as it should be. Mine rinse out with water, then squeeze dry. 79 Barth Classic

The filters are clean. I did learn quite some time ago about removing the covers and cleaning the condenser and evaporator coils. When I removed the cover the first time, the condenser coils were nearly completely plugged with a fine dust. Unfortunately, I think the unit needs replacing.
