What can a boy do to get a new bumper?

One possilbe way of filling the gap.

Our 97 Barth Monarch Tonka has stainless steel bumpers at both ends, two in front and one at the rear. I've seen photos of a few of the Barth commercial units on Barthmobile that seen to use the same bumpers. I haven't seen anything about possible sources or the costs of these bumpers.

Here's a photo of the way the rear bumper is handled on Tonka. The stainless is really easy to keep clean. The bumper is plenty stout but probably still wouldn't handle much of an impact without some bumper damage.
