Larry, I'm guessing that is not the original tail pipe. might be mandrel-bent replacement. If you don't see marks from them banging together, you should be okay. However, you would NEVER see that (without a heat shield) on a contemporary vehicle.
It would make me nervous.

Another advantage of a heat shield is that if the pipe develops a pinhole leak or two, hot exhaust will not heat up the gas tank and cause vapor lock. The gasoline in the tank can actually boil, and can be heard doing so. I made a heat shield out of a soda can and wired it in place to continue. I suspect the can was more of an exhaust deflector than a heat shield, though.
