Tomorrow morning we begin the fun task of replacing the power steering pump. The pump was cheap enough, about 50 bucks, and I'm replacing every rubber line and belts and everything else that may need replacing. 81 454 28ft. Euro. Hydro boost system. Any input?

On mine the pulley is a press fit. As I do not have a press I had to have the store change the pulley for me.

I have yet to find a high pressure line that matches what is in my 1973. There is a "454 motor home" high pressure hose listed and I got one but it does not match or more to the point reach.

I guess my point is if you have to drive it a check that you have all the parts set up before you start is a thought.

Have fun:

Timothy

P.S. Power steering fluid if left on paint takes it right down to the metal.

Hey Danny, glad to see you back and posting. Wink

Did your pump stop working altogether? If it didn't and it is still working somewhat flush your fluid before you change your pump. Turn the wheel hard to the left and right. That way your not running the new pump with the old fluid to flush it out.

Change your DOT brake fluid while your messing with flushing the power steering system. Suck out as much as possible with a dollar store turkey baster and refill before you start flushing the hydraulic DOT brake fluid. Do not use the turkey baster on the power steering and then stick it in the master cylinder - do the brake master cylinder first and bleed the brakes.

Is there a transmission hydraulic prop brake thru the power steering pump or is it on it's own pump? Flush that out too while your at it. On that you'll need to set your parking brake and release it several times to flush it out good.

Have fun... Oh, what races are you going to this year?
