I noticed the other day when i fuel up the tank there is a gas trickle under the Barth. Upon investigation it looks like it somewhere in the primary area. Any thoughts? It only leaks when I fill. 1998 29' widebody 454 Chevy chassis

Can you see any stains? BTW, what is the primary area? . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

My Euro does this if I fill a tank and don't run some out, so I always switch to the full tank for at least 10 miles or so. I assume it's because the gas expands as it gets warmer and escapes through the vent-overflow. 79 Barth Classic

Yeah, mine, too. At least it does if I try to put in the last few cups by "milking" the pump nozzle. Sometimes, the pump-watcher/traffic director at Costco acts like he is gonna call a Toxic Spill Swat Team. The stains indicate it is the gas gauge sending unit. This is common on aluminum tanks. The tank is just a little too flexible there to avoid distortion, and when the gasket shrinks with age, a leak results. I have had this on boats, as well. I make a duplicate flange of thick aluminum plate, tap threads in it, cut it in half and mount it inside with one dedicated countersunk flat head screw for each half. This provides a solid sealing surface for the gasket. Always have a length of dental floss as a retention device when doing this. Then, with a new gasket and some black Permatex or PRC 1422, you are set for life. I will have to live with mine until I drop the tank, as there is insufficient clearance to remove the sending unit in situ. I might need to look at my sending unit, anyway, as the fuel gauge is no longer truthful. BTW, I envy you guys with dual tanks. Previous MHs had them, and I always ran on the regular tank and used the high octane tank for steep climbing on hot days. Everywhere we go has steep grades to get there. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

We had the same problem with our mid-ships aluminum tank until Tere dropped it. Both supply and return fuel hoses were dry rotted as well as the overflow hose. She replaced all, sealed up the sending unit, undercoated the whole thing and now, no more smell. Ain't it grand? I've got my own personal motor home mechanic and she sure is good-lookin'! Jim

Jim, I could use a little help on a couple of Barth projects and was wondering if your Mechanic makes house calls and what hourly rate she charges. Nick
