I have a winegard antenna installed on the roof that says that it is amplified. So I figured I would get about 7-10 channels in my area because that is what I got with a home antenna in the area. I have hooked up the home antenna in the coach and get better reception with it than the roof top antenna. So I have searched what seems like everywhere for the winegard antenna amplifier that looks like this(below) to verify all the connections. The best I have found is the following below. Is this an old version of the amplifier? If so how is this suppose to be hooked up. Right now the green wire which is soldered via the shortwhite wire to the casing and the white wire via the short red wire goes straight to the center conductor on the 12VDC outlet. Is there suppose to be a jumper of some sort from the 12VDC wire to the cable connection some how? I have read in other article that when the amplifier is hooked up correctly the center conduction of the cable line is suppose to carry the 12VDC up to the amplifier in the roof top antenna | ||

The amplifier itself is mounted in the antenna itself. There is a circuit board built in. The item you have is just the power supply, as you suggested it just provides 12v to the antenna amplifier, via the center conductor. I have not tried out the one I have in my camper since the signal change to digital but: The amp I had in the house worked for analog but for digital it is of zero to negative value. The antenna is the coax the other outlet is simply a 12VDC supply for compliant televisions or cigarette lighters. Power was needed for the antenna boost and why not have it available for 12VDC televisions as well? (Steve hit send before I finished refilling my salute to the Sun being below the yardarm.) | |||

The Winegard batwing will work fine for digital. The Wingman yagi will increase signal strength at the coat of a narrower directionality. That one is not the amplifier. It is the same as the ones in my coach when it had the old ac/dc tv. There is another one in the bedroom for the second ac/dc tv. The amplifier one(which does not work in the new digital tv's) has a switch and a red light on the front , a circuit board and three bnc co-ax connnectors on the back. It was mounted above the driver in the overhead compartment. As Rusty said, the new Batwing has it built in and it does work with digital. If anyone really wants one I have the one I removed. I had a Winegard batwing that was getting pretty beat up. The crank gears were worn out and the batwing was cracked. It worked with digital but I decided to replace the whole unit with the newer HD version. The new version does work better than the old. It has a small additional UHF Yagi type array attached to the side of the batwing. Someone please explain to me why. .......... my limited knowledge of TV is that the signal sent by the transmitter, the carrier, is the same as before, the difference is in the way the "message" is modulated. The receiver separates the signal from the carrier, the booster is between the antenna and the receiver and shouldn't know the difference between channel 4 analog and 4 digital. The old antenna will work with new digital broadcasts, even the amplifier will work. The older TVs of course will not work (unless you have a digital adapter) as you are right Dick, it is only the modulation of the RF carrier that has changed. The basic frequencies have not changed. I have used my old antenna for over two years now with a new flat panel TV, later I installed the "yagi" on the old bat wing, improved somewhat. I have several adapters and they do the job. I suspect that because of the digital modulated signal the reception is more directionally sensitive and the antenna needs to be more precisely pointed toward the transmitter tower. I also suspect, since my reception has deteriorated compared to a few years ago, that the transmission power has been reduced. My knowledge of electronics has not increased since the popular use of the transister.......mid fifties? ..maybe?? #1 29' 1977parted out and still alive in Barths all over the USA | |||

Yeah, just when I figured out how the tube circuits worked, they changed to transistors. You could still find circuit points, diagnose and fix 'em but then integrated circuits took over.. "black box" I fixed "computers" for a living in the early 80's (IBM punch card MACHINES with tubes!) One of them was installed at the GM Hydramatic plant 3 months before I was born! Changed more belts, chains, gears and bearings than electrical stuff. By 1983 most of the punch card stuff went away and printed circuit boards became the "parts." By 85 I was teaching high school Chemistry, chasing electrons in atoms, not wires.
