Used these many moons ago on relays used in office equipment. Keep in mind that a colapsing coil can put out thousands of volts (the coil on gas engines depend on this factor.

We also used to use a diode in backwards.

On the other side of the coin I don't believe the shut off on our cummins has one. Going to look anyway.
