For several months, my speedometer has been hanging up as I drive. The needle will stay at one speed and not move. The odo disappears and I see nothing but the light. I used to be able to pull over, shut the engine down and restart. But today, it quit even trying. I can see the numbers on the odo but the speedometer doesn't work at all and the numbers on the odo don't increase as I travel. Could this be the sending unit? The original owner already replaced the speedometer once.

Why not replace the speedometer with a GPS model.

I had one put in my MCC and no problem with it
at any time even while driving around Indianapolis
with tropical storm Cindy Smiler

ps it has an odometer too!!

What are the effects on cruise control and OBD1 (in my case) engine control by installing a GPS unit?

The Speedhut speedo is a stand alone unit. Requires only 12vdc power and a small exterior antenna. They work excellent (except in long tunnels) and you can get whatever face style and range you want.

MY OEM speedo and cruise were cable driven from the trans. I think yours may have the trans output signal and able to drive electronic cruise. (Do you have the 480LE trans?) Either way you can unhook the old speedo and nothing else changes. (Computer sends one-way signal to speedo, doesn't get one back)

VDO makes a nice unit. And you can have them add in your existing odometer mileage when you order.
This way you have proof you did the right thing when the speedo was replaced.
I saved the old unit with the miles that matches the VDO receipt.

Now, the damned thing is working perfectly again. Wonder if there's a bad connection.
