I FINALLY have gotten to the bookmobile and am already stumped. I can't figure out how to remove the parking brake drum from the transmission. I looked on several P30 sites and they indicate a single nut attaching the drum to the tailshaft, but there is no nut or fastener of any kind. The four nuts on the rearward face of the drum just spin when I turn them. The other obstacle I see is the transmission crossmember has eight nuts and bolts attaching it to the frame, but on the upper bracket, the studs are fixed in the frame, making sliding the crossmember it the rear impossible. This transmission needs to come out somehow, and I can put the replacement in and have a running Barth!!! Who has figured this out? Thanks, Neal | |||

Bookmobile , I just went through that fiasco of removing my transmission for engine replacement . My trans doesn't have a parking brake , so i can't help you on that . For removing the crossmember , i used a torch & cut the top bolts off right below the cross member . After getting crossmember out i could see that the bolts are put in (top ones) the chassis before Barth set the body on & were covered by an alluminium chanel that the coach floor sits on . To put the crossmember back on , I drilled holes in the channel big enough to let the bolts go back down through the chassis frame & crossmember . Wasn't fun at all. Also to get the tranny out , you must remove the whole drive shaft & carrige bearing back to rear axle . Hope this helps you out .
