Engine/Starting Battery Location?
Where is the engine starting battery located on a 1986 Barth Regal?

Is it here?

Or is this just the "house" batteries?

I know this might sound like a silly question, but I thought how embarrassing it would be if I got up there all ready to start it, and did know which battery to replace!

Also, how many CCA amps do I need to start the Barth?

Thanks again
-Curtis

On our 1988 Regal it is. Three battires on a slide out tray with front one for engine and rear two for house.

Our 85 Regal is the same as your picture. Don't know about CCA. When was the last time the engine was started?

Our 84 has all three batteries there, on a slide out tray. It was set up originally for two 8D batteries, but now has two golf cart batteries for the coach in series and one 12 volt for starting.

As to which is which, you could:

1. Follow the wires underneath.

2. Turn on a ceiling light in the coach and watch it go out when you disconnect a battery.

3. Turn on the parking lights and watch a clearance light go out when you disconnect a battery.

4. Connect a voltmeter across a battery and see if the voltage drops when you honk the horn or turn on the headlights

5. If there are three batteries, it is likely that a matched pair will be for the coach.

6. If there are two batteries, chances are that the forward one is for starting.

7. If there are two batteries, chances are that the coach batteries will have some sort of deep cycle or quasi deep cycle marking.

8. The starting battery will likely have post terminals and cable connectors, while the coach batteries will likely have bolt terminals on the cables.

When buying a starting battery for a 454, the highest CCA rating in a standard size and terminal configuration would be the way to go. It can be very handy to be able to move a battery from one vehicle to another. This is good for trouble shooting as well as keeping all your batteries feeling loved, rather than neglected. It will also keep you up to date on a battery's condition. More amps is good insurance. With battery quality in decline these days, buy from a chain with lots of locations and a good replacement policy and warranty.

I have started my 502 with a lawn mower battery, but that was just on a bet with a pitcher of margaritas as the prize. Smiler

And, even though it was cold, Mobil 1 assured easy cranking.

Well, you know, margaritas never hurt. In fact, they often make hurt go away. Smiler

They were nice people and great company, but I would rather have been drinking Susan's World-Beater margaritas. I think the recipe is here somewhere.
