Lots of reading there. The true test will be in actual use. OK Rusty, let the members hear your point of view please.

We'll still use the CK4, which will not be discontinued. None of the Barths will need the new FA4 products. Since you see synthetic oil in a diesel Barth as wasting money, would your thoughts be the same here? Don't waste your money on the new oil for an old Barth?

Even CJ4 is overkill for the engines we have. But the CK4 can't hurt. Way way back when I worked at Shell's research facility we were testing syn oils for jet engine oils both our group and the recip oil group used what we called a blotter spot test. This was merely a drop of oil on a blotter with a center location and a circle about 2" diameter away and another perimeter about 4" out. As the oil wicked its way out it left a trace showing dirt migrating from the initial point of the drop. This is a crude paper chromatography that indicated the capacity of the detergent to carry the dirt generated by combustion passing the rings. As the anti-oxidant began to fail the detergent was unable to carry the extra load and the oil was compromised, time for a change or end of test. My guess is that anyone here is more diligent than necessary about maintenance than the potential of oil is to failure. My oil changes on the boat have more to do with concern about condensation danger than hours or age of oil in the crankcase. Jmo

Well I think that the new engines have much tighter tolarences so they need syn oil with the older Barths more oil changes should be fine not saying new oil isn't better just more money
