Black tank overflowing

tom taylorBlack tank overflowing
This has happened to be three times.
I am hooked to shore water.
Drain valves closed.
Somehow the black water tank fills up with water intended for the grey tank. I was shaving after a shower and happend to look over and see water coming in on the two top holes on the bowl. Butt naked. Had to grab some track pants and beat it out to the faucet to turn off the water. When I pulled the black drain, I could hear water bursting out. the grey tank was not full. The fresh water tank was half full. the Valve I have to open to allow water to come into the fresh water tank was closed. I am at a loss as to how grey water is draining into the black water unless maybe the drain valves are somehow defective......Any ideas Thanks.
I have not used the toilet since it was last drained. I still need to fix the water draining from the shower, my major use of the Barth right now as it goes to the ground.

Steve VW1st step: Always keep a pair of pants handy when in the shower!

Strange problem. Why only happened 3 times...why now?

Good luck
step2: Maybe an exorcism?

RustyTypically, the bathroom sink and toilet go into the black tank. Shower and kitchen sink go into grey.

Marvin+DorisDo you mean the two topholes of toilet bowl? Fresh water? Our grey watertank had the black handle, black was grey handle.
Does the toilet not shut off when not in use?? Doug had one in his trailer that flooded that way.

tom taylorYes I was referring to the two holes in the top of the bowl. Water flowing into them. The strange part of this is that blank tank had been flushed and not used but yes I have used the bathroom sink to shave and brush my teeth. The water kept coming after I shut off the sink and it was clear. It has not happened when nothing was turned on and the shore water connected. For my peach of mind for now I am just filling the on-board fresh water tank and shutting off the shore water. I have overfilled the fresh water tank but it runs out an overflow onto the ground.
Thanks Rusty. I was not aware that the bathroom sink went into the black tank also. Now that the black water tank has been thoroughly flushed *(even the sensors read empty for the first time) and I am going to play around with it some to see what recreates this.
I am getting too old to look for pants and run down barth steps at breakneck speed. Bathing suit would work but then it will soon be cold. lol
For youse guys in the NE, best wishes on the outcome of this impending storm. I have been thru a couple of the big blows and it aint no fun. One of the reasons i have this RV now.
I aint sticking around to see what one does.

ccctimtationAre you using a pressure reducing connector to shore water? I have had problems with high pressure shore water defeating the toilet valve and providing a continuous flush which filled the black tank.

tom taylorSo, I decided to get to the bottom of this toilet overflow before it gets cold in FL. I had prev about sterlilzed the holding tank and left them empty. I opened both dump valves, filled the holding tank and then shut off shore water and turned on the pump in the Barth after having turned on the sink in the bathroom. Water started pouring immeidately 1 to 1 from the sink. Rusty gets the Golden Egg.
But, I am still going to get a pressure valve thingy. So,, i guess now I need to shave in the shower, and when I go to shore water to not only add a pressure valve to the mix with the while hose but also the filter. Maybe i can add a clorox uptake for that occasionally need to clean the drinking water? No, way, I bring my own drinking water filtered at the beer plant. Worked good in Mexico.

RustyCheck your service fitting - later versions incorporate a built-in regulator.

tom taylorRusty, when you say service fitting, are you talking about the place I connect the water hose to the unit? I know that mine requires positive water pressure to get the water into the tank as opposed to just an opening to pour water into.

RustyIt occurs to me that you have only one water fitting; my coach has two. One fills the tank, the other provides service from a source directly.
The service fitting on mine has a built-in regulator, which I discovered when I had to replace it due to a leak.

Danny ZThe pressure regulator is one of the most important $12 dollar devices you'll ever buy for an older coach. Hooking up the hose at a park and just turning on the water can blow old plumbing to pieces. Mine is a simple brass cylinder that attaches between the hose and the intake. If you're not sure if you have a built-in regulator, get one of these. Can't hurt, might save a vacation!

RustyI agree, but I'd put it at the hose bibb, taking pressure off the hose.
