We're gonna be in CA for a long visit. Anyone there have any info on their emissions regulations and how it may effect us ? We have a banks system with a Ford 460. The pollution control apparatus has been removed. How would I go about putting one back on and would it adversely affect performance ?

If, as you say, you are just visiting CA, you can keep your FL registration. You only need to register in CA if it is your permanent residence. Out of state vehicles do not have to be smog inspected.

Thanks Bill. Being somewhat enviromentally conscious anyway, I will continue to research further on the cost and procedure of re-installing pollution control apparatus.

Don't know much aboput Fords, but I believe you should have an emissions sticker on your air cleaner lid or some similarly visible place. It will have a letter code and a diagram of all the smog devices and hoses. Your vehicle ID number must match that letter code, and all the devices must be there and connected as per the diagram.

If you have that sticker, perhaps some other motor home owner with the same year and code could help you with what goes where.

I would suspect the biggest issue would be AIR fittings on the headers. Did you coach have an AIR system? Do your Banks have them?

My smog tests have consisted of a visual inspection, a test of the gas cap, a sniff test at idle and a specified RPM, and a check of the EGR.

Another possibility is to contact the Calif Air Resources Board and give them your vehicle ID, and see what they can send you.

Some freeway on-ramps have sniffers that photograph polluting vehicles, but I don't know if that would affect an out-of-state registered vehicle.
