After changing the oil, cranked the engine to let it warm up, observe any leaks, etc. I noticed that the tensioner was vibrating left to right but the belt tension appeared okay. I do know that the engine vibrates. Is what I am observing normal or has the vibration and age worn the spring and I need to install a new tensioner? Thanks. Tom Taylor 1993 Cummins 8.3l

I hadf mine replaced a few years back, as it had lost it's ability to maintain tension on the belt. I do believe there are 2 positions the tensioner can be placed and the mechanic mounted-it on the most inboard location, as it seemed to work better there in his opinion. The tensioner should "vibrate", but I think the belt should appear to run a fairly smooth coarse. ~Mac~ 1990 31 Foot Regency Spartan Chassis Cummins 6CTA8.3 Alison MT643, 4-speed 8905-0123-31RDS-A2

If the tensioner vibrates, the crankshaft damper should be checked. In 1986 on the cummins C series 8.3L there was a recall on the camshaft vibration dampners. I don't think it still applies but here is the link to reference. http://car-and-safety.com/reca...gine-jan-22-1986.htm They use 143 ft-lbs of torque to tighten the bolts on those as per one web site.
