rlobelloEntrance Step Stuck
I am having trouble with a 1993 Breakaway retractable step. Unfortunately, I am preparing my father in law's Barth for sale as he passed away 2 weeks ago. I am unable to get the entrance step to retract. It came out immediately by using the switch, but it will not come back in now.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob

davebowersIt's your battery. It is probably to low. Start the coach up and run the engine for 1/2 an hour. That is probably the fastest way or just plug the coach in over night. Also, remember there is a swith there that keeps it out. Make sure you didn't flip that switch by accident. However, 99.9% it's you battery. If my battery is just a little low the steps won't work.

Bill Grlobello,
I would check on Dave's suggestion about the switch. Inside, on the wall by the door you should find a few switches. One of them turns the electric step on and off. If it is in the off position, the step stays in what ever position you have it in. Additionally, it should also have an overide that automatically closes it if the door is closed and you start the engine.
Keep us informed if it turns out to be somethis else. It could be a problem that someone else may have down the line.

Ed ChevalierIf you have a good charge on your batteries and it's still stuck -- the gears may be locked. There is a square drive on the gearbox that you can work back and forth with a cresent wrench.

Don ScalzoI had several problems with the orange control box located under the top step. I got tired of dealing with it so I installed a switch that I got at a marine surplus store that controls the raising & lowering of an outboard. I put it in the blank switch hole that is in the position next to the generator switch. I now raise and lower the steps with this switch.

Jim & BarbI have had this happen twice. In addition to checking for a low battery, I found I needed to clean the ground connections & plug in connections and lub the step assembly. Also make sure that your door button switch is closing. At best my steps are temperamental.

bill hIf you want to raise it before you do all the trouble shooting, look underneath for a clevis pin retained by a cotter pin. Remove the cotter pin and work the clevis pin out with a pliers. Then you can put the step up or down by hand.
If the motor is still good, and the step and its linkage are not jammed up, run a pair of wires from the battery and apply them to the wires coming out of the motor. One polarity is up, the other is down.
Look for a fuse.

rlobelloThanks to all who offered advice. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the motor to work, so I just pulled the pin and I am pushing and pulling the step manually. I will keep working on it though as I try to sell it.
Thanks again.

Don ScalzoThe motor is the same as a Ford electric window motor, remove yours and hit the salvage yards or parts stores.
Basic info ref: step problems is at:
