life expectancy of synthetic tranny fluid

2 years ago, I had my tranny flushed and started using synthetic fluid. it did improve shifting. I am beginning my third year with it after logging about 5k miles. Do I change it because it's been in there for two years or because it's synthetic, can it stay in longer?
