My fresh water tank is located under the sofa. I'm suspecking a leak ftom the tank. The sofa is a Barth standard style. When I get the maximun opening of the seat/back I can just about get my head in the opening but not able to see the problem. I know I'm too old to crawl under the coach to unbolt the sofa (not counting any rust). Is it possible to remove just the seat and/or the front panel (seat cushion down to the floor)????
Thanxx

Carl , on our sofa is a front panel that will open down. This panel goes all the way across the front of the sofa. With this panel open there are two 1/4 inch studs (7/16 wrench)on each end that can be undone and the seat will lift out. Not very heavy just bulky. You can also get to the studs by raising the bottom, but it's a little harder because you have to hold it up while you unscrew the nuts.

The back can be easily removed by folding it down and removing the same size nuts off each end. Back also has two on each end.

Nick: The front panel was the culprit. It appears to be attached to the seat. Since the genny is ok, tomorrow, I'll turn on the roof air, get upside down on the deck and see what I can do....
Thanxx

In my prior post I said I would check Nick's advise. However, yesterday was one of the Lord's best Florida rainy season days ever. If it wasn't pouring it was thundering. Apparently the damp/humid weather made the generator switches act intermittenly, so I decided to wait till tomorrow (Monday) and call Schalm in Chino, Ca and order a Main switch & an On/Off starter switch, which was also acting funky. I did check the sofa. The front panel has heater vents installed on the face and only a portion of the panel hinges down. I did see how the seat cushion can be removed, but it was too darn hot to work in "THE TOY" without the air. So I'll wait till next week to see if I get the new switches. Continued till next week..............

Carl Flack this is Carl Feren. We had a leak in our Breakaway 2 years ago when we filled it more than 1/3 full. We discovered that it was caused by failing copper crimp fittings. Our tank is under the kitchen cabinets and the leak was on the bottom in an inaccessible location. We had to have the entire kitchen removed to get to the tank and fix the leak so while they were in there I had all new pipes & screw clamps installed. $2800 later the leak was fixed. It had been going on for a long time as part of the floor was rotted out which we also had replaced as well as putting in 2" wide nylon straps instead of the steel straps which had rusted away on the bottom and allowed the tank to move freely in the compartment. We insisted on being called to view the job progress at each major step so we could evaluate the quality of the work and knew what was being done rather than just taking the ships word for it that the job was being done properly.
Fortunately we had a guy working on ours who knew exactly what to do and di it step by step ... no shortcuts.

Good Luck.

Carl Feren

Guess this is another change they made in the Breakaways, My fresh water tank is just behind the fuel tank, between the frame rails in an insulated box. Makes it good for any potential leaks around the tank but bad for COLD temperature and the need for good heaters, which I don't have. They don't work and I have never tried to get them to.

That is a very good change. I found a lot of floor rot on mine from the gravity fill hose connection.

Mine is located in rear curbside compartment located under the house batteries. I also have a smallish tank of about 40 gallon. In addition our water heater is electric only, but does heat up from the engine on the road.

As a side light to this post, years ago we had a sportscoach with the water pump under the kitchen sink. Years of small leaks had rotted the wood, and this was the main floor of the coach.

I found some shelac and thinned it down with about 1 part shelac and 2 parts thinner. This stuff penetrated better than water. Did this about 3 times until I could not get any more into the wood. The result was a very had floor and water proof. Also did the same thing with an old wooden wagon wheel hub that I made a lamp out of.

I don't know if you can still by shelac or not.

Mine doesn't work in extreme cold. The furnace has a small duct going into the compartment, but I don't always need the furnace below freezing. See here for the bypass I installed, which routes water from the HW heater into the FW tank. At my sister's last year, dumping the HW tank into the FW a couple of times a day, it never froze, and it got down to 0°F with lots of wind.
