To those of us with Gillig chassis and the Allison series transmissions I have a referral source for problems. The air/electric shifters were made by Stone Bennett Company and I was having intermittant signals on the little display on the dash. It would flicker or just go out - the coach and transmission worked fine. I called T.H. Anderson Company in Kilgore Texas (800) 594-7867 and they have former Gillig experts that know this stuff well. They walked me through the test procedure, the wiring harnesses and the grounds (those ugly grounds again) that power the indicators and relays. If you are having similar issues you can call them and they know what we need to do.

There are seven grounds in the transmission shifter box that must be cleaned. The indicator works off of the electric shifter moving across brass posts to supply a ground to the indicator. The posts and springs have to be cleaned and the ground straps removed cleaned and replaced. I am just starting but will let you know.

Hi Tom K,

Did you find that the grounds were the cause?

Yes, the housing is locatedon the curb sideof the transmission and can be reoved with wrenches. Then just use very fine sandpaper and carb cleaner on the posts and the slide. I added some contact spray cleaner and somendielectric grease and sealed upnthe housing. After thatnit works fine.

The indicator is attached to the shifter but does not control the transmission. If you have shifting problems that will be independent of the indicator and could be the air connections or possibly internal issues. I believe the Barth Manuals include a book on the Allison and it has all the information necessary for a transmission shop to diagnose shifting issues. You can also get new Stone indicator parts from the company I included in earlier posts.
