While crawling around under the '93 Breakaway, I noticed a filter, about 4" in dia and 6" long, located on a cross member just near the drive shaft. Two hoses, about 1" in dia, come from the filter. One goes to the transmission and the other goes to the radiator area, probably the transmission cooler. Previous owner had no idea it was there. It says it's an 'oil filter' and has a WIX number on it. Obviously, PO never changed it in 40,000 miles. I'm guessing it's a filter that filters the transmission fluid before it goes to the tranny fluid cooler. What is it?
I'm telling you, a Breakaway ain't no 454 Regal.

Gary, the previous owner never changed it. Once I determine what the filter number is supposed to be and buy one, do you just unscrew it and screw a new one back on, or if it's like an oil filter, would all the transmission fluid start to leak out while you were doing this? Sorry for such a dumb question. My learning curve on the Breakaway is pretty steep.

Never changed mine. found it when I pulled the transmission. But you just unscrew it. It higher than the oil pan so should not drain.
