Having received little info on my Spartan chassis I have been trying to collect part #s and documents for my coach. Sadly, I have also been unsuccessful locating the Spartan master data plate on my coach.

Unfortunately, Spartan factory support for our old orphans seems to be fading. Email and phone requests for info have often taken up to a week for responses. Apparently Spartan does not have the old info on their computers, it is still on microfiche.

I received some info for the front axle. Spartan refers to it as a DD1 axle. It is an Eaton EFA-12F4 This axle was produced by Eaton from 1981 to 1995, so I am not sure what axle was used after 1995. (I have a '98 Monarch, built 08/97 on a Spartan chassis built in 4/95 go figure...!)



(I also got a diagram for the rear axle but it is obviously incorrect since it shows disc brakes, mine has drums!) head bang

While doing routine inspection, we find that the front brakes are ready to replace. The steering draglink is also showing some play. After some research, we were able get some part #s from Spartan, then find some cheaper alternatives.

This is the part # list from Eaton, these can usually be cross referenced.



Front brakes have 15 x 4 inch drums and shoes:

Drums: Gunite #3158X

Shoes: TRP #RK1308ESTD20M

Hub covers: 1613CHR

Seal: (Spartan #0922-DD1-801056) = Stemco #382-8036 (Kit, includes #13 and #14 above)

Drag link: (Spartan #0111-KK2) = ?
I am trying to source just the link ends to avoid the $430 from Spartan confusion

When we removed the link ends the threads were badly corroded in the the cross tube. Ended up replacing the entire drag link. However, we sourced parts elsewhere for a cost of $249 including shipping.

Dayton parts#

Drag link Tie rod ends: 310-228 and 310-229
Drag link Crosstube: 347-300
Tube clamps: 347-003

With a new alignment, the coach front end is very good now. Good brakes, and steers straight. Should be done for a while now.

I believe I have the Spicer numbers for the steering parts. It appears that many of the tie rods use the same ends and only the center tube is different.



Info on kingpin kits:



Before we accept these as fact let me make some measurements on my coach. hmm

Know this old but wanted to ask the OP (SteveVW)If he had any information on rear axle on his Spartan MM . Your RV has same front axle and figured I would see if maybe you still around and had the Rear axle brakes done yet. Looking for the part numbers for seals, Brake shoes and Drums.

No problem. When I first got the coach, I gave Spartan my VIN# and asked them to send any info they had. I got a diagram of the front Eaton axle which I used for the front end parts. I also got a diagram for a Dana rear axle but it was not correct. (It showed disk brakes, mine are drums!) So much for factory support...

Inspection reveals a rear axle data plate indicating it is also an Eaton axle.

Eaton Model 19050S with 4.63 ratio.

I did get the rear brakes replaced. We installed new brake drums, shoes and rear axle seals on both sides. The shop sourced the parts so I am not sure who the manufacturers were. I should have posted this before, forgot to.

Brake drums: DB1657B
Brake shoe kit: RK4311EPR23
Seal: 393-0112

I started a new thread for this rear axle info to make it easier to find. Good luck with your coach.

Awesome thank you for information and a speedy reply.Figured Drums would cost a pretty penny but 105each for rear and 128each for the front ones (Something about needing larger holes for studs instead of the small hole drums). Shoes were like 88R 67F per wheel and seals were like 30R-40F each. Was really worried this brake job/ drums/seals was going to end up 2-3k parts range but maybe getting away with around 800 by time said and done.About what the tires cost is what I was thinking. Really is pretty easy brake job once ya have to right tools.Didn't have axle nut socket that large and ended up having to get a 3.5" axle socket at local Napa but rest I already had. Thanks again for help so didn't have to remove hubs/drums/seals then try to chase down parts.

Sorry to bother you again Steve but Was curious if you knew the part number for the tie rod ends that go on the link that goes to the steering gear box to the spindle.I noticed that the boot is completely missing on the tiered connected to the spindle from the gear box.The one on the gear box is fine as well as the drag link to other wheel. While I picked up both tie rods you mentioned just in case , These are not the same on the gearbox to spindle link. All your part numbers so far were exactly on point for the front and rear axle. I want to replace the boot but Im betting you have to buy the entire steering tie rod end to get it. I was pressure washing everything and noticed it was completely missing and old grease was only thing protecting it from dirt.

I have run the coach for many miles since the front end work. Brakes are working well. Recently I noticed some play in the steering. It appears the tie rods ends have worn and should be replaced.

When we replaced the ends on the drag link, the threads were so corroded the tube was damaged trying to remove the ends. We replaced the entire drag link assembly.

It appears the tie rod is about the same condition. Besides, the OEM tie rod is 1.75 inches in diameter and is no longer made. I ordered the 2 inch replacement assembly. The length and tie rod ends are the same so it should fit.

Spicer #1008060 Tie rod assembly

Dayton parts #347-519 Tie rod assembly

347-207 Cross tube
310-223 RH tie rod end

I will need to have the toe-in checked. I will set the tie rods side by side and make the new one as close as I can to the old one but I will have toe-in checked when I am done.

Specs call for .030 inch toe-in, + or - .030 inch.

Bill was in touch with Social Strata. There was some kind of command error and the server froze. They are not sure what caused the error and not sure if it was a hack or just an internal glitch.

Seems ok again now.
