Just spotted this post while looking for something else. Check the droppings with a magnifier. If they are cylindrical with eight sides, they are drywood termites. If you want to spend 500 bucks, have it tented. If you want to spend 5 bucks, find the exit holes above the droppings and spray them with a straw with a good pirethryn based insecticide. Then be thankful the main framing is aluminum.
