454 in take manifold
I'm thinking about installing an Eldelbrock performer manifold on my 454. I understand that there is one for the 454 without an ERG valve and one with. My Barth is 1986. Where would I look for this valve? I see the manifolds on E-Bay for a lot less that I can buy them at the local parts store. I know that there is a risk buying something off E-Bay from a couple past buys. I plan on using the Q-jet that I have or I could install a new Eldelbrock carb if that would help the power and gas milage. I know that there is no magic bullet for increasing much of anything on a motor home. I do plan on headers before next summer. Just money.

Dennis, if you want to stay smog-compliant, you should look for a 3761, which will allow the use of the EGR valve. If you don't, look for a 2161. Used aluminum manifolds should be carefully checked for cracks around the heat riser passage. Dye penetrant is best.

The egr valve that was original on yours is a little forward of the carburetor and a little to the left. It consists of a cast iron base with two bolt holes, and a circular stamped steel diaphragm housing with a small hose nipple on the top, pointing off to one side (left, I believe) and aft. If it has been removed, there will be a metal plate held down to the manifold with two bolts.

A Performer and Thorleys will do a lot for your Barth. Recurving the distributor will add a lot for very little money, too, after the headers and manifold.

A new Performer carb will still have to be dialed in. If you send your Qjet to C&J Engineering in Whittier CA, they will rebuild it and dial it in on a flow bench to your exact needs. They have done really good work for me. I can make a Holley walk, talk, sing and dance, but they do my Qjet work.

Bill I tried to find the phone number of C&J
Engineering on the web and I can't find it. Do you know the phone number? I want to have them redo the Q-Jet for me.

Bill, what should one expect to pay to have a Q-Jet rebuilt?

A possible cost-effective alternative for a rebuild:

An absolute Qjet guru....been working at carb rebuilds for 40 years plus....send it UPS & it comes back to you in a few days totally rebuilt, rebushed & shiny new!! You tell him the application, and he tweaks it just right.....

I'm delighted with the job he did for me.....

Here is the correct name, address and number:

C & J ENGINEERING
13195 IMPERIAL HWY, WHITTIER, CA 90605
Phone: (562) 946-1388

They will send you a questionnaire asking all sorts of stuff to dial it in correctly. They do a lot of race cars, but all race cars have to be towed, so they do a lot of tow vehicle stuff, too.

Bill, I really don't know what a simple rebuild costs, as I do my own. I suspect it will depend on your market. There are places in LA that will rebuild a non-electronic carb for $40 or $50.
