After I pulled into a campsite today and let the engine cool down, it would not restart. I had run a little hot climbing the Rocky Mountains, up to nearly 220. When I cracked it, it would not even fire which makes me suspect the fuel solenoid. Anyone have a picture of one so I know what I'm looking for? Can it be lubricated? Thanks.

Most of my stuff is for the 8.3 C engine but they are similar.

The bracket that mounts the solenoid was broken. I removed the solenoid and bracket, then wired the fuel valve open. You have to go back and unwire it to stop the engine but it will get you going. New solenoid and bracket. 3 wires, they have two coils, for pick and hold.

On the 8.3 you can see the top of the solenoid to the left and down from the big intake pipe.(rusty bracket, next to red wire)

5.9 should be similar, good luck.

Ahh but the other Aristocrat called and gave him a tutorial over the phone. He is running again and now knows where and what to check. Still not sure if it is the problem...

Richard, you had an overheating problem at the Snowtan in Minnesota. I am not sure what you mean by "when I cracked it"? Our cummings owners may be able to shed light on your overheating problem. It might not be the radiator is dirty. My Caterpillar has a coolant filter with shut off valves. There could be valves on your cummings. How old is your antifreeze and is it full? When you begin to overheat turn the cab heat on high. Using the cab heater will dump some heat from your engine in the cab.
Getting back on topic, about your fuel solenoid now. I do recall that ED Rather (MWrench) worked on your solenoid at the Milford 2014 Get together. I am sure ED will reply as soon as he reads about your difficulties. .

Thanks Dana! I can usually think outside the box. I had no idea of what he cracked. There appears to be another following of this subject here also. Maybe Richard had tired eyes or excessive beverage consumption.
Glad you could help Richard along his trip. Many thanks to all that pitch in here with help.

Kenny I just got him on the phone and told him what he was looking for and how and where to see it from. Once he knew what and where he had Nancy crank it as he had his hand on it so he could tell if it was moving. She cranked and it fired right up and he now knew where at what it should do. I told him to wait to replace until he had more info. ie it wouldn't start?
