After a recent 260 mile trip home with our 94 Breakaway (230hp Cummins with MD3060 Transmission), I was surprised to hear the transmission cooler fans running after shutting the engine down. It had idled in the driveway for about ten minutes while I had unhooked the toad. Temperatures were in the 80's. I had never heard them run before since engine noise drowns out their normal sound. They continued to run until I pulled the battery cables -perhaps 10 minutes later. When I reconnected the chassis batteries, the fans remained off and I've not heard them run since. My documentation does not mention electric cooling fans and I have no detailed wiring diagram for the Spartan Chassis. I assume the fans are turned on by a temp. sender which triggers a relay. Has anyone experienced fans continuing to run and is this normal? Where is the relay that controls the fans? Any help would be appreciated.

This is a WAG - but the torque converter runs while the engine does - and the ATF circulates - I suspect this is normal for the fans to run on after shutdown.

The fans are usually thermostatically controlled. It would be normal for them to run for awhile after shut down, but I can't guess how long would be normal.

If your Breakaway is like mine (I have the 230 and MD3060 also)what you may be hearing is the A/C fans that are mounted back by the muffler. I had the same problem and found the relay on the passenger side of the engine room which turns these on and off with the A/C was sticking. Wacked the relay and they shut off. I have replaced the relay and had no further problems.

To my knowledge, there are no dedicated fans for the transmission. I know I don't have any.

I could take a picture of the relay in question and post it if I learn how to post on the forum :+)

It sounds like my stubby little Breakaway has the same A/C condenser arrangement (it's separate from the radiator, the most common location). But I've not ever had it run on after shutdown.

Anyway, it's located behind the vent louvers just forward of the air induction louvers, and only runs when the HVAC selection is "A/C".

I think you have a hose-tracing adventure ahead of you, to make sure there's actually a transmission cooler with electric fans.

Mine doesn't have any, but I've got the oddball DD 6.5L TD/GM 4L80E drivetrain, which is different from the Cummins/Allison drivetrains.

Stu, I have posted the picture on my website. go here:
http://www.mwrench.com/Barth/ACfanrelay.JPG

I have the pencil pointing to the fan relay. I replaced it locally with a standard GM part, I don't have the box but will get the number in a day or so. The mounting holes didn't quite line up but was close enough to force it there.

If anyone is interested I am starting to put up pictures and things about my Barth on my website. I wanted to do write ups for each subject but this summer has been hectic. It will be a winter project to clean it all up. The main site for Barth stuff is:
