There is a small external filter in the line that goes from the transmission to the transmission cooler on my 93 Breakaway. Looks like an oil filter. Neither Allison or Spartan has a part number. Any info out there? Since I'm changing over to Transynd, want to change everything I can.

Jim, Might that filter be for the cooling system?

Don't know the number of the filter, but any filter that fits would work. It is just an oil filter. There is probably a number on the one you have. It was a third party setup that did not come from Allison.

I debated on keeping it when I swapped transmission but the filter lost the debate. I still have the mount. Never know when one might need to add a filter to something.

It was a WIX filter, part #51268. Allison had a cross reference so I picked it up there along with the Transyend ATF. The addition of the filter, cooling lines, transmission cooler, added 7 quarts to the normal 9 quart capacity of the shallow pan 542 Allison. All done now. Did it at same time that I had the rear main seal replaced. $450 to drop the tran, replace the seal, put everything back together. That was a good price and they did a good job. Now to get it sold. Somebody is going to get a damn good Breakaway.

Only 9 quarts for a shallow pan 542!

FWIW I like a filter on the transmission output. If the converter lunches itself, the cooler is protected from swarf, as is the tranny proper. And, of course, if the trans lunches itself, the cooler is protected.
