No no not me. I'm talking about the appliances. I have one of the newer barths it's 1998. I put it in storage nine months every year. And take it out and use it about three months every year.

I recently needed to replace the air conditioning plastic covers. I noticed that the coolant fins are in bad shape. However the air-conditioner works really well. I have recently been an hundred plus and everything works well.

This holds true for the furnace water heater and refrigerator although all of them are original. So they are close to the end of their service life I think.

I have the four Button thermostat. Which means that I cannot really replace one Aircon. I was thinking of replacing the Air Con's and the refrigerator while in storage this year. However everything is working well. Am I just being paranoid.



What is the service life of the appliances in the RV. Any recommendations as to whether to change it while it's in storage this winter or wait until it fails.

Well Tom, I am of the "OLD SCHOOL", if it works, don't fix it. My Barth is a 1994 vintage approaching 240K miles and use mine 20-40K every year. It does sit a few month during the winter months but for the most part it is very USED!

The water heater is original and both A/C are original, they work. The furnace has been replace because of a installation error at Barth causing the chanber to burn thru. The refrigerato has been replaced by the PO but I suspect he used it without leveling the coach.

I clean the A/C fins each spring and straighten any fins that get bent. The disposalable rod has been replaced in the water heater. Routine Maintenance is key and usually there are warning signs, such as the front A/C unit does not cool as well as the rear. The front is used a lot, I do suspect I will have to replace the front fairly soon. I am not going to mess with it until it fails completely.

I'm with Ed. If it ain't broke - don't fix it. In so saying I have replaced the cooling unit in the refrigerator and installed a roof a/c as the basement unit did not work when we got it. Every thing else was done by choice not need.

We pretty much have the same coach except I have the central under coach air that works great. Most everything in our coach is original and still works great. Our old 35 regency which was 15 years older than the Monarch and had a few replacement issues but we replaced them when things failed, just wore out or were not working properly. It's amazing how long things last if you maintain them. If you are worried about it and don't feel comfortable, repair or replace it. A few dollars spent is better than a spoiled vacation sitting in a repair facility.

Looking around at vehicles I notice that there are many well made "aluminum hull" vehicles that are in regular service as much as 50 years, most of them are airplanes and commercial busses or boats.

My Cessna was made in 1968. When I ask non aviation guys to guess how old it is they usually go around 15-20 years old! It has been in a hangar for some time now and gets used fairly regularly. It can do anything it could when it was new. (Actually better since it has modern avionics and tuned exhaust, and Imron paint.)

The key is regular use and regular maintainance. The commercial vehicles usually get this. Storage is tricky… If you have a sealed chamber full of dry nitrogen in a climate controlled area with no sun (a museum!) they can last a long time if the engines are pickled well, tires are off the ground, batteries out or on charger.

OTOH, if you are parked in the sun, 100+ degrees, high humidity (esp in salt air), with ozone/air pollution, you have damage to paint and tires, mold and mildew inside, rusty engine and chassis, crusty switches that don't work, dead sulfated batteries and nothing works in about 5 years.

So many variables…

I try to replace before failure on large components, ie engine/driveline, to prevent down time on the road. Smaller stuff I get on the fly as they quit. Keeps me busy enough. Next year 86Barth will be 30 years old, with better than OEM engine and accessories, too. We'll see how it lasts.

By way of comparison, my unit is now in its 37th year, w/125k miles. Original 2 way fridge still
cools & makes ice when it's 90+ outside.....original microwave still works without a hitch and original water heater still
heats fine...I'll probably give reefer to RV Hall of Fame if & when it croaks.....

Are there any known Barths painted with imiron(c-I-l)or other brands two part paints.Here oil co.s paint there oil delivery trucks with imiron paints to withstand scratching against shrubs.Wally going over old posts,Van-isle.
