I have several diesel engines here they all have some form of preheat but not my 91 barth just apparently turn the key is this normal as it is gonna get cold up here in ont. | |||

As Carl says there should be a plug-in block heater when you are on shore power. On our coach we have a household type light switch above the driver's seat by which you can turn on power to this plug from inside the coach while you are parked. Besides this, instead of glow plugs we have fuel preheated activated by turning the ignition key to the first position. This activates the low air buzzer as well. About 15 - 30 seconds of this is always used to start a cold engine. Works fine unless temps are down near freezing, then it's time to plug in the block heater. Hope this helps. Thanks to Carl & Don,my pole barn has no hydro & is 4 or 500 ft away could I start my generator & power the engine block heater in that manner? I may not be heading south till mid Jan. this year so it will be cold . | ||||

I ran a 3+ground #8 wire from a subpanel on the house to the barn, then put in a small circuit breaker box. But 500' is a long way and amps may drop significantly. Would the cost of putting hydro out there be prohibitive?

I may be getting off the original subject, however here is the problem with my 85 Barth Regency with a detroit diesel in starting. I purchased a new battery and a battery charger/minder. The battery has plenty of power and will spin the starter like crazy with no results. I pull my Jeep over to it and put on the jumper cable and it will start right away. Once running and it will start back up though out the day with out any problems. I did notice the battery charger/minder will only charge it to 12 volts and when I jump it from the Jeep it jumps up to 13. Thanks for any suggestions. Jim | |||

I started out to do the same thing and learned that the distance would create too much of a voltage drop so I had the coop install an overhead cable to a power pole and panel. Now I have 200 amp box.
