If only we had a retired chemistry teacher to demonstrate these characteristics at the next GTG . Dropping drawers would take it over the top . '92 Breakaway Cummins 190hp, No Modifications Allison AT542 Floor Plan 30-BS-11B 9205-3798-30BS11B

Guess all fuels scare me. Jet aircraft seem to go up in flames pretty easy, even with a fuel Blatter, is JP4 close to diesel?? 1971 24 ft Barth Continental P30 chassis 350 engine

Yeap, JP4 and JP5 almost same viscosity as #2 diesel. Nick

I can say I was much more worried about the metal shavings getting into the fuel than the chance of igniting the diesel. I do know that its harder to ignite than most think but I would not want do find out just where that line is crossed by accident.

It’s been over a year. Any updates on pluses or minuses to the diesel heater? Nick thanks again for posting. These are the things that keep our site interesting and fresh. I like the heater. As mentioned earlier our breakaway was built with diesel heaters. The original owners wanted no propane in the living air. Has a electric stove and the refrigerator was only hooked up to ac. Only the original generator was propane powered. Before we bought in 2005 a prior owner had installed a Honda water cooled twin generator, a gas cook stove and hooked the propane up to the refrigerator. Anyway the diesel furnace has no thermostat. It acts like a cook stove where you control the heat. If you run it on low most of the time it will build up carbon deposits and quite working. You will need to remove and clean out the inside (easy). The best solution is to run it on high for about 20 minutes before shutting down. The Barth was made with 2 units. The rear has never worked. Had to replace the front. But in AZ have no need for both. Only have one a/c and could use another. '92 Barth Breakaway - 30' 5.9 Cummins (6B) 300+ HP 2000 Allison Front entrance

Sorry for the delayed response! The heater still works great. We haven't been able to use our Barth much this winter, but during the coldest days, we ran it to keep the inside relatively warm. I would say the way Gary's is set up with one in the front and one in the back would be best if you frequent areas where the heater is important. The newer heaters do have somewhat of a thermostat in the controller but just throttle up or down and won't turn themselves on and off. As Gary said, running them on low for an extended period of time increases the build-up of soot inside. That alone is one of the biggest reasons to make sure you don't get one too big for your space. All in all, we very much love ours! We have one in our smaller truck camper still also and enjoy it too.
