The floor section in our shower needs work. It is discolored in places and some of the coating is starting to flake. There are no cracks or any leaks, probably because I caulk around the edges once in awhile.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what kind of coating I should use to improve the looks?

Did you look into installing a new shower pan or is that not a option. Cost is about $150 depending on the size.

You can use gel coat to resurface the shower floor. It is available in boat stores in many colors. It can be sprayed or brushed and will self level. They have instructions for surface prep and it works well.
