I am new to the board but a long time lurker. I went to look at the 91 breakaway at PPL here in Houston. I got it's tag numbers 9104 3733 30BS1B
Overall it look like an older coach that had been stored outside. A will need a through inspection it looked like it had not had any PM for some time. Besides all of the old coach issues I was concerned about the roof, it has some type of Kool Seal all over the roof. It looks as if it was applied by a five year old.
One of my questions, where is a good source for the brakes and chassie parts. I called my local NAPA and they were lost, if I can get PN they can help me.
Has any one changed the couch to Captins chairs? and changed the rear bed to twins? we have two small kids,4 and 7 and wanted better seating.

basicfish, the chassis is made by Spartan and parts are readily available from them. They can probably supply brake parts as well. Before you decide to take out the couch, have a look underneath. Lots of duct work, plumbing, etc. to hide or relocate. Same with change to twin beds. Where is wiring central?? ie. the circuit breaker panel etc. Will it have to be moved. We have a Regency with twin beds and looked a long time to find it but it was exactly what we were looking for. What you want to do is doable but you probably need to be able to do a large part of it yourself to keep it from being cost prohibitive.

Recovering the roof is not too bad of a job just messy and a lot of work to cleanup the old mess.

Thanks for getting the tag number.

Welcome to the forums!

The engine's under the rear bed, as are the 120VAC and the house 12VDC panels; there's no way to convert to twins without major surgery. It would actually be impractical, IMHO, due to the issue of where to relocate those items, as well as how to provide engine access.

The water pump, heating ducts and registers, and wiring are under the sofa, and its base is permanently installed; that, too, would be impractical.

The roof coating should look primitive - it's rubber (although someone may have put KoolSeal over it. Unless there're leaks, ignore it. That rough-looking surface will be appreciated when the roof is being cleaned, and one doesn't slip and fall.

Welcome basicfish.

i have a 91 breakaway 28' that has twin beds
in the rear. it all depends whats underneath ur bed. all my boxes are in a closet. i am also capable of converting to queen size bed just by removing the little nitestand in the middle and throwing the queen mattress where the twins were.
a very simple convert in my barth, taking all but 30 seconds. just depends what ya got inside.

Rusty, you mentioned in your post that the roof was rubber. Did you mean that the aluminum roof was covered with rubber or that the Breakaways had a rubber membrane roof unlike my 85 Regal? Just a curiousity in case I ever get rid of my Regal and get something like what you have(which I would really like to do)

It's definitely an external coating. Whatever it is, it's held up well as there are no fissures in it at all, and no sign of lifting or peeling.

I don't know if it was factory-applied, but neither the prior owner or I did it.

The factory roof coating was Anvil 400. Pretty good stuff. Looks a little rough, though.

House roof coatings here in FL are popular (I did mine, and the difference is noticeable, although someone needs to get up there and pressure wash it). Anvil 400 is the best, but it's a bear to apply.

Welcome to the site basicfish Smiler

When it come to relocating anything, the first question you need to ask is "How much of this can I do?"

What is your background like?

Relocating some of these items may be "above your pay grade" and would thus "take your paycheck away"

But, if you are up to the challenge, "anything is possible"

And, in the next 3 photos, this was done so one of our members could install a queen sized bed!!!

You can read up on that project here.

Thanks for the advice on the coach. I am not worried about fixing it up I have restored cars and rehabbed three houses. So I have been here before. I guess all that is left is to get them to take what I think it is worth.
thanks
Ron

This coach is getting down to a price where someone is going to get a deal I think. $16,950.00 Wonder what cash offer would buy it?

I agree - considering that a year or two ago, this would've been reasonable at $25-28K, it's a heckuva deal.

PPL are selling this coach ‘as is‘ now, no warranty on anything and they are not moving from that price for now, cash sale or not. After sitting in their lot for over one year and probably deferred maintenance year before trade in, it will need a lot of maintenance: rust everywhere (two of the levellers are already jammed), brakes, bearings, seals, … What about major components : engine, trans., diff., how long before extensive damages are done? Still a good deal at that price?

Thanks for the report on this coach. I had wondered why it was priced so low and still available. I assumed it must have issues.
