Here.
If you're looking to upgrade to a high-def DVD player, it looks as if Blu-Ray will be the victor, and the lower recent prices on HD DVD drives are possibly the last gasp; don't be "Beta-Maxed"... Recently purchased a Sony 46" Hd TV and wanting to include a DVD player, I was directed to a Blu-Ray player. Picture quality was great, BUT I had to think back to the days of BETA/VHS syndrome.Yes,back then I happened to go with the Beta product(which was a great product ) and yes, eventually, I changed to the VHS!(because of rental availability ) So, from this past experience, I decided to just go with a reasonable player and WAIT and see if the Blu-Ray is the next best! So, I will wait and see! I am not a big rental person as I use Pay per View more, so it doesn't affect me that much. but it is an interesting topic Neil |

The Sony Playstation 3 makes a good hi def blu ray player for the same money as a low end HD player, and you can fly an f 16 in your spare time. Even so, at this point, paying $50 or so to buy, and then watch a movie in HD is not an attractive proposition to me. AFAIK blu ray movies are not available to rent, it is easier and much cheaper to get HD content off your cable or satellite. I think the best way to go may be to download HD content to a hard drive and play it back using the Apple TV gadget ( $229.00 ) or another method. Any day now we will be able to "rent" HD content ( 720p 5.1 ) online using itunes for $4 to $5 per movie. For the low definition DVD's we own, or not, there is software available to convert and store the movies on your hard disk for playback at your convenience.

HD DVD is officially dead; Toshiba (the lead proponent and builder of the drives) has announced that it's ceasing production.

The PS3 also loads a Blu Ray Movie in about 15 seconds. A very big plus. All we buy are good animated flicks, Cars, Toy Story, etc & Concerts.
