Gary,is this a "drop in" replacement for a allison 542 and will it accept the parking brake?

Almost a R&R. I did it. Do a search as I wrote quite a bit about it a couple of years ago. As for the brake you simply swap the 2000 brake with your 542 brake.

Need anymore info let me know

Gary, since you have more familiarity with this, what do you feel a steal,a fair,or an exorbitant price is for this unit?

I paid $900 plus freight for ours. It had about 85K if I remember.

All told with everything I ended up under $2K

I thought I stole it. But in watching most used ones will be under $2K. Mine was an early one (2001) and still a 5 speed. Later on the they activated the 6th gear.

There are kits available to convert a 5 speed to a 6 speed. But, with a 3.73 RE I'm only turning about 1800 RPMs at 65-70 (Don't remember as it is over a year since it was on the road). Getting ready to put about 6+ thousand miles on this year.

Gary, thank you for being so free with your information.I have been looking at the evil bay postings but,my 6th sense tells me that there "might be"a lot of less than totally honest sellers out there. So I am still looking for what appears to be a reputable unit at a fair price which is going to be around $1500/2000 plus shipping, the electronic cable, speed sensor, and brain.Feel free to correct me if I have forgotten anything.
