Connecting to shore power charges the house batteries. I'm wondering if it is harmful to the batteries over time to be continuously recharged like this.

It all depends on your converter, however, most made in the past 20-25 years are designed to float, and not constantly trickle charge the batteries. The Progressive Dynamics 9xxx series also provides an automatic desulfating cycle.
